The short answer

Amplifier or Bottleneck is a free self-test for managers of managers. Fourteen questions cover four areas: decisions waiting on you, information flow, developing your managers and sharing credit. You get an amplifier score out of 100 and the two areas where your team waits on you, each with one fix. A team-rated version is coming.

A question from The 42 Test that touches this topic.

What makes a leader an amplifier or a bottleneck?

What your managers do while you’re not there. An amplifier’s managers make the calls that are theirs, hear about changes early, get stretched and get the credit, so their teams do more. A bottleneck’s managers wait: for sign-off, for information, for the answer. Most leaders are both, in different areas, and rarely see which.

Take Amplifier or Bottleneck: fourteen questions, about five minutes. Answer for the last month.

What does the test look at?

Four areas, three or four questions each:

  • Decisions waiting on you. Whether your managers know which calls are theirs, and whether you reopen them.
  • Information flow. Whether your managers hear what changed, and why, from you and early.
  • Developing your managers. Whether you stretch and coach them, or solve their problems.
  • Sharing credit. Whether senior people know who did the work.

What do I get at the end?

An amplifier score out of 100 and the two areas where your team waits on you most, each with one thing to try on Monday. The bands are “Amplifier” (70 and above), “Sometimes a bottleneck” (40 to 69) and “Bottleneck, for now” (below 40). The framing and names are our own.

Amplifier or Bottleneck is built for your managers to rate you anonymously. Team mode is coming. For now, you rate yourself.

How is it worked out?

Each answer runs from 1 (never) to 5 (always). Six of the fourteen questions describe a healthy habit, such as “My managers know which decisions are theirs to make”, and are flipped before scoring. Each area’s average shows how much your team waits on you there. The overall average becomes the score, from 0 to 100.

The questions, areas, bands and advice are a draft written with AI and are waiting for a coach’s review. Treat the result as a mirror, not a verdict.

How do I know if I’m a bottleneck?
Look at what waits for you. If decisions stall when you’re away, managers learn about changes late, and senior people hear your name more than theirs, your team is working around your calendar. The test scores those habits so you can see which matters most.
Can my managers rate me?
That’s what the test is built for, and team mode is coming: your managers will answer anonymously. For now you rate yourself, which gives you the half you’ll compare against.
How is the amplifier score worked out?
Each answer runs from 1 (never) to 5 (always). Six of the fourteen questions describe a healthy habit and are flipped, so every answer measures how much your team waits on you there. The average becomes a score from 0 to 100, and the two areas where they wait most are shown first. It’s a reflection, not a verdict.
Is Amplifier or Bottleneck free, and who sees my answers?
It’s free with no sign-up. Your answers and score stay in your browser; Coach42 never sees them.
