Two Weeks Away

A company that can’t run for two weeks without you is a job, not a company.

LiveSelf

The short answer

Two Weeks Away is a free self-test for founders. Twelve questions ask what would stop if you disappeared for a fortnight: decisions, customers, knowledge and the team. You get a score out of 100, the areas where the company leans on you most, and one thing to hand over on Monday for each.

Who it’s for
Founders who can’t remember their last proper break, or who dread the inbox when they come back.
What you get
A score out of 100, the four areas ranked by how much they lean on you, and one hand-over for each.

The holiday you spent checking messages.

A question from The 42 Test that touches this topic.

What breaks when a founder is away for two weeks?

Usually the things only you know how to do, and the decisions nobody else feels allowed to make. A customer escalation sits unanswered. A hire stalls because only you can say yes. A release waits for your review. None of these are failures by the team. They’re signs the company was built around one person, which is normal early on and risky later.

Take Two Weeks Away: twelve questions, about three minutes. Answer for an ordinary month, not the week before a holiday.

What does the test look at?

Four areas, three questions each:

  • Decisions. Which choices wait for your sign-off, and up to what amount others can decide.
  • Customers. Whether your biggest customers know anyone but you.
  • Knowledge. How much of how the company works is written down, or lives in your head.
  • Team. Whether people check with you before doing things they already know how to do.

What do I get at the end?

A score out of 100 and the four areas ranked, heaviest first. Each comes with one thing to try on Monday, such as writing down your three most frequent decisions and who can make them without you. The score bands are “The company is you” (below 40), “Leaning on you” (40 to 69) and “Ready for two weeks” (70 and above).

The questions, scoring and advice are a draft written with AI and are waiting for a coach’s review. Treat the result as a mirror, not a verdict.

What should I read or take next?

For a six-week plan before a real break, read how to make your business run without you. If people keep bringing you problems to solve, why new managers give answers too fast applies to founders too. The 42 Test shows how you lead across 42 questions, including whether you solve problems for people or grow them into solving them. More tools for this stage are on the founders page.

What is a founder bus factor?
It’s the number of people who would have to be away before work stops. A bus factor of one means a single absence is enough. In many young companies that one person is the founder, and Two Weeks Away shows where.
How can a founder take two weeks off?
Start a month ahead. List what only you do, hand over the most frequent items with a written note on what good looks like, and agree who decides what while you’re away. A trial week first shows you the gaps.
How is the Two Weeks Away score worked out?
Each answer runs from 1 to 5. Questions where “always” is healthy are flipped, so every answer measures how much leans on you. The average becomes a score from 0 (everything waits for you) to 100 (nothing does). It’s a reflection, not a diagnosis.
Is Two Weeks Away free, and who sees my answers?
It’s free with no sign-up. Your answers and score stay in your browser; Coach42 never sees them.
